“After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?” (Galatians 4:3)
What we began with let us persevere in.
When you were called, Christian, you were given a new name, a new spirit, and a new mission. I wonder, have you forgotten the gift?
Do you find yourself waking with worry, striving for perfection and always anxious about the errors? Have you grown tired by striving? Is your heart heavy from the work?
Are you trying to attain your goal by human effort?
We need to ask ourselves this question everyday. For the gift of the Spirit is folly to the world and each day we are asked to forsake it. Grace makes little sense – but work, yes work makes sense to the anxious world. If we pull ourselves out of bed without remembering the gift, we will undoubtedly be pulled into the lie of effort. We will believe we are earning the gift, and making our own way.
We will forsake the cross and think of ourselves as the chief sacrifice. We will make a crude “Christian” doctrine and never enter the rest of the Spirit.
What we were granted in the beginning let us grow into each day.
Run to the Spirit. Run to your intercessor. Remember grace. Trust in faith.
Forsake the lie of human striving. Remember the gift.
