“You have forgotten God your Savior, you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress. Therefore, though you set out the finest plants and plant imported vines, though on the day you set them out, you make them grow, and on the morning when you plant them, you bring them to bud, the harvest will be as nothing…”
Oh how great we are at increasing our activity.
We set out the “finest plants”.
We make our houses grow.
We prune our estates.
We invest our finances.
We hedge our bets.
We prepare – for the day, for the week, for the year.
And yet we neglect the matters of our soul – the matters of our affection and fortress.
We forget our sustainer.
Let this verse not be true of us this week. For we will be tempted to increase all of our activity and forgo our love.
We will be asked to run and run and run.
And we will look wise in the world’s eyes for our running.
Yet, for all the “fine plants” and “imported vines” we will still lack our substance, our rock, our Savior.
We may not be able to both look wise for the world and hold our Savior too. And this is hard but it is the path of the cross – it is the path of resurrection. It is the path of joy.
